Sprite Zero With Tea Is Cosplaying As a Whiskey Highball and I Have Concerns

I want to be very clear about my intentions here, because what follows might make me look like I have a problem: I walked to the mart down the street purely because I wanted a soda. That’s it. That was the whole plan. Not sparkling water, not “something healthy,” an actual carbonated soft drink — which is how I ended up walking home with a bottle of Sprite Zero with Tea, the way God and the Coca-Cola Company intended.

I stood in front of that fridge for a genuinely embarrassing amount of time. There’s a lot going on in there — a full shelf of Monster in flavors that sound like nail polish names, actual makgeolli sitting two feet from Fanta like they’re coworkers — and somewhere in the middle of all that, one bottle stopped me: Sprite Zero with Tea.

I need everyone to understand how suspicious I was of this concept. Sprite. Tea. Together. On purpose.

The visual crime scene

I bought it anyway, obviously, because I contain no impulse control when a new flavor variant exists. Got it home, cracked it open, and immediately had to sit with what I was looking at.

This is not a soda color. This is a *whiskey* color. This is the color of a drink someone orders at 11pm and regrets at 7am. I have never in my life looked at a Sprite-shaped bottle and thought “that looks like it could ruin my Tuesday,” and yet.

(For the record: it is zero percent alcohol and zero kcal. I checked. Twice. Mostly because I needed to explain to my own brain why a soft drink was giving me whiskey-highball anxiety.)

Pouring it over ice made it worse, in the best way

I poured it into a glass with ice because I am, apparently, incapable of just drinking from the bottle like a normal person having a normal Tuesday.

I need you to look at this photo and tell me, with a straight face, that this isn’t a cocktail. It’s not. It’s zero-calorie soda water pretending very convincingly to be a bad decision. I have never been more suspicious of a beverage that was this innocent the entire time.

The actual taste, since that’s apparently what matters here

Fine. The important part. It tastes like carbonated Arizona iced tea. That’s genuinely the most accurate comparison I’ve got — that specific sweet, slightly artificial black tea flavor, except somebody snuck bubbles into it when nobody was looking. It’s not bad. It’s actually kind of great, in a “why has nobody done this before” way, right up until you remember Fanta already does a tea-soda hybrid and this is clearly Coke looking nervously in that direction.

The ingredient list is exactly what you’d expect from a zero-sugar drink — sucralose, acesulfame potassium, black tea extract doing the flavor heavy lifting, the usual gang — and yes, I read the whole thing on the back of the bottle like it owed me money. 0 kcal, 0g sugar, 40mg sodium. Fully accounted for, nutritionally boring in the most reassuring way possible.

A brief, resisted guilt moment

I will say — because I promised honesty on this blog, not a highlight reel — there was a flicker of “cool, another single-use PET bottle, very on-brand for the eco blog” the second I twisted the cap open. I clocked it, I let it be annoying for about four seconds, and then I remembered I walked to a corner mart on a whim for a drink I was going to finish in one sitting, not exactly a systemic packaging crisis. Not every purchase needs a redemption arc. Some of them just need to taste good and not kill the vibe. This one didn’t.

The verdict (as required, loudly)

  • Visual honesty: FAILED, spectacularly. Looks like a whiskey soda, is a zero-calorie soft drink. Deeply confusing at a glance.
  • Taste: PASSED. Carbonated Arizona-tea energy, sweet without being sugar-drink sweet, actually refreshing over ice.
  • Zero-calorie promise: PASSED. 0 kcal, checked the label myself, no notes.
  • “Am I going to keep buying this”: Yes. Immediately. It’s already living in my mental rotation next to regular Sprite.

Would I recommend it to someone who just wants a soda and doesn’t want to explain to their family why their drink looks like a rocks glass? Yes, with the small warning that you will have to explain it anyway, because someone will ask.
